I mwfqmwfgsovrani di Ailech provenivano dagli mwfwUí Néill del nord e prendevano il loro nome dalla mwgafortezza collinare di mwgqGrianan di Aileach, che si trovava sull'altura di Greenan, nell'odierna mwggcontea di Donegal. I re di Ailech sono spesso annoverati tra i mwgwsovrani supremi irlandesi.
